Gospel
“The Gospel is not just a plan of salvation, it is the objective news of what God the Father, through His Son, has done for His people.” — R.C. Sproul
(R.C. Sproul)
I. The Origin: Created for Glory
Whom do we belong to?
Your life is not an accident. You were created by a holy and sovereign God, the source of all beauty and truth. He is not a distant force, but the Creator who owns every breath we take. We were designed for a purpose: to reflect His glory and enjoy His presence forever. To be truly human is to be in a right relationship with Him.
1. The Sovereignty of Ownership
Because He made us, He owns us. His laws are not arbitrary constraints, but the “owner’s manual” for the human soul.
"Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."
— Revelation 4:11
Proclamation: You are not your own. Every breath you draw is a gift from the Holy One who sits on the eternal throne.
II. The Brokenness: Why the World Falls Short
The Depth of Our Need
We feel that things are not as they should be. This “brokenness” is what the Bible calls sin. Sin is not just a mistake; it is a rebellion—a forensic coup designed to overthrow God’s throne and live by our own rules. As a result, we are not just slightly broken; we are spiritually dead. We have lost not only the desire for God but any ability to save ourselves.
1. The Severity of Judgment
God’s holiness means He cannot simply “overlook” rebellion. His wrath against sin is the necessary reaction of His perfect justice.
"None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God."
— Romans 3:10-11
Proclamation: You cannot fix your relationship with God through effort, morality, or sincerity. In the face of His justice, our own “good works” are but rags.
III. The Hope: The Person & Work of Christ
The Savior We Never Expected
The Gospel is the “Good News” that God did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who is both fully God and fully man. Jesus lived the life we failed to live and died the death we deserved to die.
1. The Active Obedience (For Us)
Jesus didn’t just die for us; He lived for us. He fulfilled every requirement of the Law perfectly, earning a “righteousness” that can be credited to your account.
2. The Substitution (Instead of Us)
On the cross, a “Great Exchange” took place. Our sin was credited to Him, and He bore the wrath we deserved. He was treated as if He were the sinner, so that we could be treated as if we were as righteous as He is.
"For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous."
— Romans 5:19
Proclamation: Redemption is an objective fact of history. Christ has accomplished it, and His resurrection is God’s proof that the debt is fully paid.
IV. The Response: Faith Alone
Receiving the Gift
How do we receive this righteousness? Not by working harder, but by resting in what Christ has done. This is faith. Faith is like an empty hand that lets go of its own pride to grasp only Christ. Even this faith is a gift of God’s grace, given so that no one can boast.
Proclamation: Salvation is not a deal you make with God, but a gift you receive through faith alone. Turn from your own strength and trust in the finished work of Jesus.
V. The Assurance: Eternal Peace
The Unshakable Certainty
Those who are in Christ Jesus are justified—declared righteous by the Judge of all the earth. This status is permanent. It does not depend on your performance today, but on Christ’s victory forever. You are no longer a servant under the law, but a child in the Father’s home.
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
— Romans 8:1
Proclamation: In Christ, you have perfect peace. The covenant God has made with you is as stable as His throne, until you see Him face to face.
