1. Introduction: An Unbreakable Hope
In a world of shifting sand and broken promises, the human heart longs for something certain. When it comes to the salvation of our souls, we often wonder: Is it up to my fluctuating will or feelings? Or is it anchored in something greater? The historic Christian faith points us to a “Golden Chain”—a series of divine acts that follow a necessary order (Ordo Salutis). It begins not with man’s initiative, but with God’s: Regeneration precedes Faith and Repentance, which inevitably leads to Justification, Sanctification, and finally Glorification.
The sequence can be visualized as follows:
The Golden Chain of Salvation /
This U-shaped “Golden Chain” represents the spiritual dynamic of our salvation:
1. Divine Descent (The Left Side): Salvation begins with the sovereign decree of God. It descends from the eternal Election into our time through the Effectual Call, reaching down to the very depth of our dead hearts in Regeneration.
2. The Turning Point (The Center): Where the new life first breathes. Faith & Repentance are not the source of this chain, but the vital transition point where the grace given internally manifests as a living response of the soul.
3. Divine Ascent (The Right Side): Having been united to Christ, the believer is lifted up. We are legally declared righteous in Justification, progressively transformed in Sanctification, and will ultimately be brought back to the pinnacle of God’s presence in Glorification.
This chain is found in the heart of Paul’s letter to the Romans:
"For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son... And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified."
— Romans 8:29-30
2. Election in Christ: The Eternal Anchor
The chain begins in eternity past, rooted in the sovereign “Foreknowledge” of God. As discussed earlier, this is not a passive observation of future choices, but a “fore-loving” (Genesis 4:1). Before the world was made, God chose a people for Himself in Christ.
"Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain."
— Genesis 4:1
"Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him."
— Ephesians 1:4
"And as many as were appointed to eternal life believed."
— Acts 13:48
Luke’s record in Acts provides a striking reversal of our human perception: we do not become the “appointed” because we believe; we believe because we were already “appointed to eternal life” by God’s sovereign hand. Faith is the first observable fruit of our eternal election.
As St. Augustine famously observed, we are chosen not because we were holy, but so that we might become holy through His grace.
3. Effectual Calling: The Invincible Voice
The eternal election enters the timeline of our lives through the “Calling.” While the external Gospel is preached to all, the “Effectual Call” is the internal work of the Spirit that sovereignly draws the elect to Christ.
"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him."
— John 6:44
This is what the Westminster Confession of Faith (10.1) describes as God “enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God, taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them a heart of flesh.”
4. Regeneration: The New Birth
Regeneration is the “monergistic” act of God—a work of God alone in which He imparts life to a spiritually dead soul. It is the necessary prerequisite for faith. A dead man cannot belive; he must first be made alive.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
— John 3:3
"He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit."
— Titus 3:5
Regeneration is not a cooperation between God and man. It is a spiritual resurrection. Before the call and the faith, God must act upon the heart that is stone-cold and dead in sin:
"But God, being rich in mercy... even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved."
— Ephesians 2:4-5
"And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
— Ezekiel 36:26
John Owen explained that this “new principle of spiritual life” is infused by the Spirit, enabling the blinded eyes to see the glory of Christ for the first time.
5. Faith and Repentance: The First Breath
Once the soul is made alive, the immediate and inevitable response is “Faith and Repentance.” These are two sides of the same coin: turning from sin and turning to Christ. Because the heart has been changed, the believer now desires what they once detested. Crucially, the Bible presents both as divine gifts granted by God.
"For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake."
— Philippians 1:29
"When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed."
— Acts 18:27
Faith is not an independent work we bring to God to secure our salvation. It is something we do “through grace” (Acts 18:27). The same is true of repentance; it is not a human resolve, but a divine granting:
"When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, 'Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.'"
— Acts 11:18
"God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth."
— 2 Timothy 2:25
As the Canons of Dort (III/IV.14) remind us, God “produces both the will to believe and the act of believing also.” Faith is not our contribution to the chain; it is a link forged by the Spirit in our hearts.
6. Justification: The Legal Declaration
Justification is the great exchange. Our sins are reckoned to Christ, and His perfect righteousness is reckoned to us. It is a forensic (legal) declaration by God that we are innocent and accepted.
"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
— Romans 5:1
Martin Luther correctly called this the “article upon which the church stands or falls.” It is the moment the Golden Chain secures us to the heart of the Father.
7. Sanctification: The Progressive Life
While justification is a one-time declaration, sanctification is the life-long process of being made holy. It is the outward fruit of the inward life. Though the believer still struggles with sin, the Spirit ensures they grow in the likeness of Christ.
"For this is the will of God, your sanctification."
— 1 Thessalonians 4:3
Even in our strivings, it is God who works in us. The chain does not break during our failures because it depends on the One who preserves the saints.
8. Glorification: The Certain Completion
The final link is the certain end of all the elect. Romans 8:30 speaks of it as already finished. When Christ returns, our bodies will be raised, and we will be free from the presence of sin forever.
"Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is."
— 1 John 3:2
This is why the chain is “golden”—from the election before the foundation of the world to the glory of the new heavens and new earth, not a single link can be lost.
9. Conclusion: Soli Deo Gloria
The Ordo Salutis reveals a God who is both the Author and the Perfecter of our faith. We are not safe because we hold onto the chain; we are safe because the Golden Chain of God’s decree and power holds onto us. To the One who stooped to call us, be all the glory forever.
Soli Deo Gloria.
