The Promised Land

After the conquest under Joshua, the land was divided by lot among the tribes (Joshua 13–19). This map reflects the tribal allotments as described in Scripture:

• Transjordan tribes — Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh received land east of the Jordan River (Numbers 32).
• Simeon’s enclave — Simeon’s inheritance was carved out of Judah’s portion in the Negev (Joshua 19:1).
• Philistine coast — The coastal strip from Gaza to Ekron remained unconquered during the early settlement period (Joshua 13:2-3).
