Introduction: The Inextricable Link
If one recognizes the theological collapse of Theistic Evolution—how it deconstructs the historicity of Adam, the origin of sin, and the nature of death—then a critical question follows: Is there any remaining need to adhere to a timeline of 13.8 billion years for the universe and 4.6 billion years for the Earth? This is a profound and logically consistent inquiry. If the theological foundation of evolution is severed, the “lifeline” of vast geological ages becomes a hollow and disruptive redundancy.
1. The Theological Contradiction of “Pre-Fall Death”
The most core conflict lies in the definition of death. The secular timeline is based on the fossil record, which is interpreted as a chronicle of hundreds of millions of years of biological death and extinction.
If one accepts these billions of years, one must accept that long before Adam’s sin, the world was already filled with the extinction of dinosaurs, animal predation, disease, and death. This directly contradicts the biblical truth that death entered the world specifically because of sin.
"Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—"
— Romans 5:12
If death is a penalty that followed Adam, then the geological layers containing billions of dead organisms cannot exist prior to Adam. To place them before the Fall is to make God the author of death rather than the restorer of life.
2. Divine Sovereignty vs. the Mask of Time
In a biblical worldview, God’s creative acts are bounded by His sovereign decree and purpose. Evolution requires billions of years to allow “randomness” to take effect. In this sense, vast amounts of time are used to mask the active intervention of the Creator.
The God of the Bible is One who “speaks, and it comes to be” (Psalm 33:9). If God required billions of years to “prepare” the Earth, it would be inconsistent with the image of the Almighty presented in the Book of Job—the One who governs the laws of nature and disposes all things according to His will. A sovereign God does not need the “assistance” of astronomical time to accomplish His creative will.
3. The Flood as a “Time Reset”
The biblical account of Noah’s Flood provides an entirely different model for Earth’s geography: Catastrophism. While modern geology assumes “uniformitarianism” (the present is the key to the past), the global Flood suggests that the geological layers are not records of billions of years, but of a massive hydraulic catastrophe that occurred over the course of a few hundred days.
Just as the Flood served to cleanse the corrupted “Watcher” hybrids and reset human history, it also physically reshaped the planet. The fossil record is not a timeline of life’s evolution, but a graveyard of a world judged by God.
4. Functional Maturity (Apparent Age)
When God created Adam and Eve, they were created as mature adults, not infants. When He created trees, they likely had fruit and rings. They possessed a “functional maturity” or “apparent age” from the first second of their existence.
In the same way, God created a universe that was fully functional and mature. Light was already reaching the Earth from distant stars so that they could serve as “signs and seasons.” The Earth was created ready to support life. This maturity is not a “deception” by God, but a requirement for a functional creation. To demand that the universe start from a “point zero” and evolve for billions of years is to impose a naturalistic constraint on a supernatural act.
Conclusion: The Coherence of a Young Universe
From a purely theological logic, the billions of years are unnecessary. If one adheres to the authority of Scripture, a “young universe” (thousands of years) achieves a perfect logical closure with the preservation of the bloodline of Christ, the judgment of the Flood, and the urgency of the coming final judgment.
Once we strip away the mask of the secular billions of years, God’s actions in history—including the preservation of the sacred line for the Messiah—become much more vivid, focused, and urgent. History is not an aimless drift through infinity; it is a precisely calibrated drama of redemption.
