Introduction: The Impossible Seeker
One of the most profound questions in spiritual inquiry is: “What happens if a person who is not chosen by God sincerely tries to find Him?” This question, while logical on the surface, presupposes a state of the human heart that does not exist in our fallen reality. It assumes that there exists a category of “sincere seekers” who, apart from any divine intervention, possess a natural inclination toward the holiness of God. However, when we examine the depths of the human condition, we discover that the act of “seeking” is itself the greatest evidence of an already present, transforming grace.

I. The Silence of the Natural Heart
The consistent testimony of reality is that the natural man, left to his own resources, does not wander toward God. He may wander toward religion, toward spirituality, or toward a god of his own making, but the Holy God of the Bible is an object of natural aversion.

St. Augustine of Hippo, in his battles against the superficial views of human nature, emphasized that the fall did not just make us “sick,” but spiritually “dead.” A dead man does not seek a doctor; a doctor must first bring life before the patient can even recognize his need.
In his Confessions, Augustine marvels at how God’s initiative always precedes human action:

II. Divine Regeneration Precedes Human Seeking
If the natural heart is silent and averse, why then do we see people knocking? Why do we see people weeping over their sins and crying out for a Savior? The answer is simple: they are not acting out of their own unregenerate power. The “knock” is the fruit of a “touch.”

Jesus Christ explicitly defined the order of salvation when He spoke to the crowds. He did not say that anyone who chooses Him can come; He said that no one can come unless a higher power acts first.

Therefore, it is a theological impossibility for an “un-chosen” or “un-graced” person to sincerely seek the true God. If they are seeking, it is because the Father is already drawing. The desire to seek is the first spark of the fire that God Himself has lit. To suggest that a sinner seeks God of his own volition is to suggest that light can come from darkness or life from a tomb.

III. The Harmonious Will: Not Just Attraction, but Drawing (Draw)
A common misunderstanding is that God might drag a screaming sinner who is unwilling to enter heaven into it, or reject some repentant and weeping person who is seeking salvation by locking them out of heaven’s gate. Both images are distorted misunderstandings of the Bible that ignore the nature of the sinner’s will. God’s drawing is first to change the heart; the sinner’s heart of stone becomes a heart of flesh, and they naturally and joyfully turn to Christ of their own accord. Therefore, this drawing is not coercion, nor is there any resistance. This is also why we have the theological concept of “Irresistible Grace.”
三、 和谐的意志:神不光是是吸引,更是救拔(draw)

1. No One is Forced
God does not save a person against their will. Rather, He changes the nature of their will. He replaces a heart of stone, which hates God, with a heart of flesh, which loves Him. When the heart is changed, the will follows its new delight. A person is not “dragged” to Christ; they run to Him because they have been made to see that He is the most beautiful and necessary Treasure in the universe.

2. No One is Rejected
Consequently, there is no such person who “wants to go to heaven” but is rejected by God. Heaven is the place of God’s unmitigated holiness and presence. The unregenerate man does not want that heaven; he wants a version of paradise where he can remain the master of his own soul. If someone truly desires the God of the Bible, that desire is the absolute proof that God has already begun a work of grace in him.

These promises are absolute. But we must remember that the power to ask, to seek, and to knock is a granted power. The “everyone” who asks is the “everyone” whom the Father has awakened.

IV. Conclusion: The Gratitude of the Found
The realization that our seeking was fueled by His grace humbles the soul. It removes any ground for boasting. We do not say, “I was smarter than my neighbor because I sought God.” Instead, we say with the Psalmist:

That very hunger is the signature of God upon your heart. He who began this good work of “seeking” in you will surely complete it in the “finding.”
