Popular spirituality often views humanity as morally “sick” or “drowning,” needing only a life preserver of grace thrown in our direction so we can grab it. This view suggests we still have the inherent capacity and desire to reach out to God.
However, biblical theology uses a much more radical term: “dead.” A corpse in a spiritually state cannot swim toward a life preserver. Death means an absolute inability to respond to spiritual realities. Before grace can be accepted, it must resurrect. True biblical grace is not medicine for a sick patient; it is resurrection power for a corpse.

St. Augustine masterfully addressed this in his defenses of grace, noting that the grace of Christ the Physician is not merely to bandage sores, but to raise the dead. The Great Physician does not just prescribe medicine for us to swallow; He speaks life into corpses. To admit we are “sick” unto death is to acknowledge our absolute reliance on a resurrecting God.

It pierces the stoniness of the heart, enlightens the mind to see the beauty of Christ, and sweetens the will so that the person freely and joyfully runs to the Savior. God’s grace doesn’t just invite the unwilling; it transforms the unwilling into the willing.

This would leave the believer in a perpetual state of agonizing doubt and spiritual exhaustion.
But because salvation is entirely by grace from its inception to its culmination, the Author of our faith is also the Perfecter of it. The grace that raises the spiritually dead and grants them true faith is the exact same grace that powerfully preserves them to the very end. True assurance is not found in our grip on God, but in His unyielding grip on us.
"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
