The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the pivot upon which the entire door of “Historic Christian Faith” swings. It is not merely a spiritual metaphor or a symbol of hope; it is a space-time event that shattered the reign of death. Without the physical, bodily resurrection of the Savior, our preaching is empty and our faith is futile.
1. The Physical Reality: Not a Spirit
"See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have."
— Luke 24:39
The “Nature of Christ’s Resurrection” is defined by its substantiality. Christ did not rise as a ghost or a vague influence. He rose in the same body that was nailed to the cross, now glorified and immortal. This physical reality confirms that God’s plan is not to discard the material world, but to redeem and renew it.
Historically, the Church fought against the heresy of Docetism (from the Greek dokeo, “to seem”). The Docetists, influenced by Gnostic dualism, believed that matter was evil and that Christ’s body was a mere phantom or illusion. They rejected the physical resurrection because they could not accept that the Divine could inhabit “corruptible” flesh. St. Ignatius of Antioch and other early fathers vehemently opposed this, for if Christ only seemed to suffer and rise, then His work of salvation is also a mere illusion.
2. The Great ‘Amen’: Christ’s Justification
Theologians point out that the Resurrection is the Father’s “Amen” to the Son’s “It is finished.” On the cross, Christ was “delivered up for our trespasses”; in the Resurrection, He was “raised for our justification” (Romans 4:25). It is the divine verdict that the sacrifice was sufficient and the debt has been cancelled.
"If Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain... But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept."
— 1 Corinthians 15:14, 20
3. The Firstfruits of the New Creation
The Resurrection marks the beginning of the “New World” within the old. Christ is the “Firstfruits,” meaning His resurrection is the pattern and guarantee for the resurrection of all who are united to Him. As the Father through the Holy Spirit raised the Head, He will certainly raise the members of the Body.
"For by His own resurrection He has abolished death, and the corruption of humanity is done away with, that the new life might appear."
— St. Athanasius the Great, *On the Incarnation*
4. The Trinitarian Triumph
The “Historic Christian Faith” emphasizes that the Resurrection was a collaborative work of the Triune God. The Father gave the command (Galatians 1:1), the Son laid down His life and took it up again (John 10:18), and the Holy Spirit exerted His life-giving power (Romans 8:11).
The tomb is empty, not because Christ evaporated into a spirit, but because He conquered the grave in the flesh. Today, we stand in the light of the Resurrection, knowing that the “Firstfruits” have appeared, and the full harvest of glory is surely coming.
